This cheesy, golden bread is soft on the inside, slightly crispy on the outside, and bursting with cheesy goodness. It’s perfect as a snack, appetizer, or side dish!
Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
- 1/4 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
For the Cheese Filling:
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, Parmesan, or a blend)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning
For the Topping:
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Activate the Yeast
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
Step 2: Make the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-6 minutes.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
Step 3: Prepare the Cheese Filling
- In a small bowl, mix the shredded cheese, garlic powder, and dried oregano (if using).
Step 4: Shape the Bread
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a large rectangle (about 12×16 inches).
- Spread the cheese mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.
- Roll the dough tightly, starting from one long side, to form a log. Pinch the seam and ends to seal.
Step 5: Second Rise
- Place the rolled dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet, seam-side down.
- Cover with a damp cloth and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
Step 6: Bake the Bread
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Brush the top of the bread with beaten egg and sprinkle with grated Parmesan, if desired.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
Step 7: Cool and Serve
- Allow the bread to cool for 10 minutes before slicing.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
Tips
- Use different cheeses for varied flavors (e.g., gouda, gruyère, or pepper jack).
- Add finely chopped herbs, jalapeños, or cooked bacon for extra flavor.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 1 month.
Enjoy your cheesy, homemade bread—warm, gooey, and absolutely delicious! 🧀🍞✨
