Ingredients
For the Bread:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup whole milk or buttermilk
For the Apple Mixture:
- 2 medium apples (peeled, cored, and diced)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
For the Cinnamon Swirl:
- 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan or line it with parchment paper.
Step 2: Prepare the Apple Mixture
- In a small bowl, toss the diced apples with cinnamon and sugar. Set aside.
Step 3: Make the Cinnamon Swirl
- In another small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.
Step 4: Make the Bread Batter
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined (do not overmix).
Step 5: Assemble the Bread
- Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly.
- Layer half of the apple mixture on top of the batter, followed by half of the cinnamon swirl mixture.
- Repeat with the remaining batter, apples, and cinnamon swirl. Use a knife to gently swirl the cinnamon mixture through the batter.
Step 6: Bake
- Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If the top browns too quickly, tent with aluminum foil after 40 minutes.
Step 7: Cool and Serve
- Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Slice and enjoy plain or with a dollop of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
Tips
- Apple varieties: Use tart apples like Granny Smith or sweet varieties like Honeycrisp based on your preference.
- Add-ins: Stir in 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts or pecans for a nutty crunch.
- Storage: Store at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the fridge for up to a week. Freeze slices for longer storage.
